Forums / XMB - Forum
Last post by Big Kahuna - March 07, 2021, 12:32:00 PM
Example hosted in BKH is https://www.daveschultz.com/forum/

Of the free ones, I prefer this one to SMF, by a slight margin. Both are actually very good - but I like the fact your can add a menu item (like a like to another of your sites) in the navbar without hardcoding. The problem with hardcoding is that upgrades overwrite it if the file modified is replaced with new in the upgrade.

A new feature at BKH is the addition of Installatron in your account's Cpanel. This allows you to easily install any of over 50 applications without having to create databases, users, FTP the files to your account on the server and running the setup. It does all of that for you. Additionally, it maintains upgrades for many of those applications.

On Installatron, there are about 10 forums you can install. If you look at the dates of the last version, you will see that most aren't supported anymore. I'd avoid those and stick with either XMB or SMF.

If you want a forum, but just don't want to deal with the installation, configuration, and category/forum structure - I can quickly do any or all of that for you. Plan out your, Category names and descriptions, forums that are under each category (names and Descriptions) and submit a Support Ticket https://www.bigkahunahosting.com/support/ with that information, and I'll give you a quote. That said - give it a try first, we can always delete it if you were to give up and want a pro set it up.

Forums / Re: Vbulletin
Last post by Big Kahuna - March 07, 2021, 12:15:16 PM
an example of a Vbulletin from on BHK is https://www.joebidennotmypresident.com/forum/

BHK excels at installation and upgrading of Vbulletin, because we don't throttle resources like the discount servers do. If you've ever tried to install vbulletin on Go Daddy, you've most likely also contemplated suicide too while installing. We let our accounts utilize all available server resources to get the job done quickly.

Portals / What is a Web Portal?
Last post by Big Kahuna - October 26, 2019, 12:21:08 PM
If you go to a doctor and have a Patient Portal where you can see your lab results, update you medications, request refills, and message the doctor or his nurse - that's a web portal.

If you pay your credit card on line and go to a site where you can download your statements, see recent charges, dispute a charge, contact various departs, see recent news and deals offered, view past payments and see you rewards level - that's a web Portal.

Wikipedia describes it as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_portal

There are many web portal applications, each with themes and addons. In the followings weeks I'll try to install and configure a couple of examples.

CPanel / Be careful out there!
Last post by Big Kahuna - October 26, 2019, 12:12:11 PM
Be careful who you give your cpanel or admin level application logins to.

You have to have complete trust that they won't install malicious code to back door into your site to trash it, use it to spoof emails, or in the case of eCommerce - steal. I've personally never had a problem, but in over ten years only one programmer, who I knew well and trusted has had my login info.

This is not something you should do with someone you meet on a support forum - offering to help.

eCommerce / Zencart

Zen-Cart's web site https://www.zen-cart.com/

Support Forum For Zencart https://www.zen-cart.com/forum.php

I've installed an example of ZenCart at http://www.bigkahunahosting.com/zencart/ and I'll load up some examples of store data when I get a little more time.

Zen Cart is full featured - It will handle orders soup to nuts including shipping, sales tax, packing slips, confirmation emails, credit cards all of the reporting you could dream of. It can handle home businesses selling less than 100 items to bigger business selling thousands of items. It is highly customizable to give that "custom made for you" only look and feel.

This all comes at the price of time required to configure how you want to run your business; store departments/categories; and products with descriptions and photos. Once completed you will have a store which is killer looking and efficient. This is one of the applications that many offering to set up your store at $150 hour use. You can save that money if you can invest the time.

It requires one database and the Big Kahuna Package for a small store or Enterprise Package of hosting for busy stores.

We can install, and even configure how you operate, departments, special pages and do the graphics, but you should handle adding the items you're sell as it is time consuming. A person of average intelligence and computer user abilities can configure, add pages and departments. There is strong support on their forums (but be careful hiring some beside BKH to install/configure as you have to trust them to not put a backdoor on your hosting account) and documentation.

Banner Ad Servers / Revive - Ad Server
Last post by Big Kahuna - October 26, 2019, 11:37:25 AM
https://www.revive-adserver.com/

Revive is a free to use click banner ad application. If you go to many of the web sites used as examples for the various applications, you will see some have Leader Board ads at the top and/or bottom of the page and/or sidebars. This is an application where your advertisers get a report (as often as you set up) on how many times their banners displayed (viewed) and on what sites, and the number of visits (clicks) sent to their site. You can charge them based on the number if views or clicks.

In the application you set up your Advertisers, their campaigns (they may have many for different seasons) and their banners. Then you set up websites and what banners are to appear on them. You'll get an "Invocation Code" that you place in the location if the web site you want to display. You then charge the advertisers based on the views or clicks. There are budget limit settings you can set if an advertiser doesn't want to pay more than $100 month. Once that's hit, it stops displaying the ad for that customer. The invocation code causes the ads rotate in the locations set up on the web site. So 100 customers might rotate on the same space - based on their budget.

You not only can have the banners rotate kn your site(s), but can sell the service to the active web sites, either giving them a flat amount or a percentage of the revenue.

While there are many ad server applications, this the one I've used for the last ten years. It may be the best, it may be the worst, but it does everything I need and is simple.

Application Tips & Questions / Admin Usernames and Passwords
Last post by Big Kahuna - October 26, 2019, 11:16:35 AM
The world is littered with assholes trying to hack into your applications and hosting accounts for various reasons. They cover the range of just being a malicious asshole to using your hosting account's email processing to spoof and spam the world.

Most Applications when installed default to the username of admin. Using that as your username solves half of the hacker's problem. Change it to something else - like your most used Forum Handle. Use at least 6 characters. Use a complicated (mixture of numbers, upper and lower case letters & symbols) password that you can remember. If you grew up on 486 Wood St as a kid - try <486^WoodSt>. If your first car was a 1972 Mercury Comet  - maybe use something like 1972@Mercury@Comet
